ARTIST STATEMENT

As a Kanaka wahine (Native Hawaiian woman) and a U.S. Army veteran, I navigate the complex intersection of identity as both an "American" and a Native Hawaiian in occupied territory. Rooted in my personal genealogy, intricately intertwined with the lāhui (nation of Hawaiian people), my narrative is enriched by my experiences as a combat medic. This duality gives rise to conflicting identities and allegiances, fostering a profound sense of ambivalence. Through my art practice, I endeavor to reconcile these tensions, weaving together threads of trauma and resilience with deep reverence for the complexities of my life.

Drawing upon my training in photography, mixed media, and fiber arts, I employ a diverse array of techniques to articulate my autobiographical narratives. My exploration of fibers, fabric, papermaking, and collage serves as a tactile medium through which I communicate the intricacies of my lived experiences. With my camera, I capture poignant moments that encapsulate my journey, inviting viewers to bear witness to my healing process through the raw exposure of my vulnerabilities.
